'Stros Before Pro's 1st Edition

Troy Patton #19 LHP
Troy Patton, recently promoted to Triple-A Round Rock, had a fantastic first start. The talented lefty allowed just 4 hits in 7 innings of work, most outs came on the ground or in the air. The Astros' best pitching prospect had command of the strikezone, throwing 53 of the 78 pitches for strikes. Though Patton struckout just two Omaha Royals, he has shown strikeout potential in the past. His arsenal consists of a fastball that can reach 94-95 with good tailing action, changeup, slider, and a curveball that has good bite to it (when he's got good command). In the video below, he states that control of the curve is one of his weaknesses. He may be a September call-up but if the Astros aren't in the race don't expect him on the roster until 2008. You never know though, Purpura may be gone before this season is over and the next GM may think Patton is ready for the show.

Patton answering questions about promotion and future expectations

Mitch Einertson #10 OF
This 21-year-old native of Oceanside, California has been tearing up Carolina League pitching. The starting outfielder for the Salem Avalanche won player of the month in May, compiling an average of .400 in that stint, and has been hot ever since. This versatile 5th round pick out of high school is tied for the league lead with 59 RBI's and also ranks top ten in avg. (.305), slg. (.488), total bases (125), ops. (.855), and two-baggers with 25. Slowly, as he matures those doubles will turn into homeruns. Expect a promotion to Double-A Corpus Christi relatively soon.

August 15: (2nd game) 2-5, 2 singles, 2 rbi, 2 k's
August 15: 0-4, rbi, k
August 14: 0-4
August 13: 0-4, 2 k's

Brian Bogusevic # LHP
The former first round draft pick out of Tulane has had a tough road so far. He's been hampered by injuries the past 2 seasons. When he's played his play has been up and down. Though he can give up hit parades, he has shown progress by throwing gems. His arsenal consists of a fastball that ranges between 89-93, changeup, and slider which is his out pitch. If he doesn't work out as a starting pitcher, he may end up in the bullpen or outfield. Bogusevic was projected to be a pitcher or an outfielder before the '05 draft. Some teams liked him for his bat, the Astros liked his arm. His stuff needs to improve because he was very hittable at Salem, giving up 133 hits in 114.1 IP. Despite the stats, he has proven he can dominate games. Some games at Salem were so impressive that it garnered him a promotion to Double-A Corpus Christi. His pitches can be successful in the major league, there are just tweaks he has to make.
Last game, August 16: 4.1 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K's
August 10: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K's

August 4: .2 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 1 k

Old School Bogus' video. Not really important to his pitching, but just shows his pure athletic ability.

what outfield position does Mitch Einertson play

"O" said...

he's a centerfielder

Anonymous said...

is his defense as good as his offense

"O" said...

Yes it's very good. Accurate. Back in '04 they tried him out at 2b, not because he wasn't good at centerfield, but because they thought they had found another biggio. A player that could play any position. The experiment failed and he went back to centerfield. But anyways, yes he does have good defense. Interesting fact, Tony Gwynn tried to lure him to Long Beach State before he was drafted.
Gwynn - "he has a beautiful swing, a swing better suited for wood bats than metal" Gwynn said that in '04

I hope the stros don't keep him in the minors to long like Jason Lane. His stats look really good. When do you think he gets promoted

"O" said...

Well thats hard to say, I expect him to be promoted to double-A before the season ends but you know the Astros. They like to be safe with their talent and wait. Yeah, i'm on your side i hope they don't keep him down to long, he's too good for that.

Yeah but who knows what timmy p will do.Lets hope he doesnt trade him.Mitch is one of my favorite prospects we have.

"O" said...

With the Astros looking like sellers at the deadline, they'll be looking to add prospects to the system so most likely he will not get traded

Anonymous said...

Yeah but look what he did to Willy Taveras,Jason Hirsh,Taylor Buchholz last year and it looks like Jennings is going to be a another rental player. If Timmy P does anymore trades like this then we'll never get to the playoffs.

Do you think Troy Patton is ready for the bigs?

"O" said...

Not yet, soon though. He still needs to show some consistency at Triple-A. There's no need to rush either, the Astros are far from contention and he's just 21, about to turn 22. If he can string 3-4 good starts in a row, he'll prove he's ready. It'll be interesting to see if they give him a couple starts in September.

I hope he has Roy Oswalt potential
instead of Carlos Hernandez potential.Does Patton have injury
issues?

"O" said...

Roy Oswalt potential might be a stretch. I think he'll be a good 2 or 3 starter. Most of the balls hit against him are to dead center and Minute maid has one of the deepest in the league so I do think he'll be more successful than Carlos Hernandez. By the way, Carlos Hernandez would've been an amazing strikeout artist if he hadn't gotten hurt. His mid-90's fastball and his sharp curveball were a great arsenal.

Anonymous said...

Yeah but the injurys really hurt Hernandez.

"O" said...

Yes, he was called up too soon. Making the jump from double-A straight to the majors. His arm couldn't take it.

Anonymous said...

Wasn't it his shoulder that got torn pretty bad?

"O" said...

Yes and he never reached 94-96 velocity ever again. Just ashame. He was a good talent.

Anonymous said...

Did retire or he still in the minors?

"O" said...

Not sure if he retired but i know he's no longer in the minors. He might be playing. Last time i heard of him was back in '04. I dont know where he is now

Anonymous said...

Yeah its a shame they called him called him up like that.
